A Day's End

August 17th, 2009

Taken at Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, Florida just after sunset. I had just finished eating dinner in town and I noticed the incredible cloud formations and rushed to the beach to get some shots. I had tried all week of my vacation to reflect the scenes I was seeing at the beach, and I believe I accomplished representing this scene with this photo. Taken at f/10 for 30sec on 100ISO with a Cokin P 2 stop GND filter.

I love it - so beautifully dramatic. I love too see that detail in the sand too... a crisp and sharp image; which is what I crave for my desktop backgrounds. ;)

Thanks for this wonderful submission. :)

Nice picture, however I feel that the long exposure has too much of an oil-painting effect on the ocean and the clouds, unless that was intentionally done in post-processing. The cloud boundaries in the top left hand corner show a bit too much colour banding for my liking.

Love the shot man, like josephwm said, but also i see alot of noise maybe lower the ISO and bring in a longer exposure to even it up. 4/5 bro keep up the good work!

Whoa. Those ARE some incredible cloud formations. I especially like the one in the left-center. I have never seen anything like that before!

This is a great submission, and I can see why IFL posted it. It's very high quality, and the subject and composition are excellent!

Nice pic. I love the colors.

@ cjfortune: Bring the ISO down and longer exposure? This was shot with a 30 second exposure and ISO 100. On my 40D ISO100 is the lowest setting. I know other cameras are capable of lower ISO's but I believe the noise you are referring to is caused by Post Pro not ISO.

very nice! Siesta Key is one of my favorite beaches, and every time i've visited, the sunsets have been AMAZING. I just moved from Florida to Boston a few months ago, and I'm really pining for a place like this.. Thanks for your submission!

Finally someone posts a picture from my hometown beach - Thank you. Out of curiosity, where on the Key was this taken? Kinda looks like one of the private beaches.

ok EastTN, seemed like the ISO was on 600+. Anyways it wouldn't hurt to maybe cover it up a little with a blur filter, thats just me anyways, cheers for the comment.

That's the beach I spent the first 16 years of my life going to. I miss it every day. I will be back, oh yes. I will be back.

Don't see too many shots from America on IL.

Great capture!

Great photo. Can't complain about a thing. Is it perfect? Not quite. But we don't know what camera was used - some are better in low light than others. And with a 30 sec exposure, the clouds may actually have moved, causing some of the edge artifacts that folks have noted. But I love it anyway. Thanks for sharing.

I love the contrast of colours - makes this shot so dramatic, and wonderful. This is a picture that you could wait years to capture, and still be proud of when you finally capture it.
