Route to Castle Mountain

August 22nd, 2009

Castle Mountain is located within Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies, approximately half-way between Banff and Lake Louise. Visitors usually only pull over to take pictures of wild animals, so they were kind of distracted when they saw me kneeing in the middle of the road, aiming towards Castle Mountain. :-D

It's a beautiful photo and I love the colours. :)

But for me 1920x1200 doesn't seem to work for me?

I must say, Maestro, when I saw the thumbnail I thought, "Not another shot of a road meandering into the distance." The full blown version knocked me back. You have worked your magic again.

This is nice - I'd say your best photo so far. I like the low-angled light coming from the left, and I'm glad you didn't HDR it to the point where those shadows were lost.

Very very nice, as already said, looked like another road shot, but the full version is very nice.

Is it an HDR shot?

current
For a reason.

No, this is a RAW shot, purely postprocessed with CameraRaw and PS. I don't like HDRs that much anymore. They simply look too artificial to me.

@Macindows
I have to agree with you... keep doing the RAW shots. I never liked HDR shots that much either. But a good RAW shot.. PP well, looks 10 times better and more real.
Great shot here... as an example.

WOW. Just amazing. I would have sworn it was a HDR with the way the shadows were. Just awesome. Definitely going to be my wallpaper for a long time. Just beautiful.

Excellent as always Macindows!

I think most people do not have a clear idea of what HDR is. HDR = high dynamic range. In other words, to capture more dynamic range of light then a camera can capture. Your eye can see around 24 f-stops of light and the average DSLR can only capture about 6-9 f-stops in a single RAW exposure. So if you can't capture all the dynamic range of light in a scene in one exposure you'll need to bracket (hdr) your exposures and then blend them later (tone mapping). People who say "I don't like HDR" either don't really know what it is or are basing their opinions on the plethora of horribly tone mapped HDR images out there. HDR done right will look more realistic then capture with blown out highlights/shadows. The tone mapping is where all the magic and disasters happen. Not in shooting multiple exposures. As excellent as this image is, there are still blown highlights in the clouds and just a touch in the darkest shadows. The processing here though, has made this image excellent. Although, personally, my eyes keep jumping to the blown out portions in the sky. HDR has it's limitations especially when it comes to windy days and moving object. So don't hate HDR because you've seen someone do a horrible job of tone mapping. HDR is nothing new. It was called composition in the film days. With digital files and processing, we can do a lot more much easier and faster. HDR is here to stay and I believe one day you will be able to get a camera that can capture 24 or more f-stops of light in one exposure.

Awesome shot!

I was there this summer and I never thought to stop and take a picture on that road. It was fun road to drive on, curves + rally car = great time.

Again a terrific photograph! I have driven the Trans-Canada Highway between Calgary and Vancouver many times but usually I am so focused in making it in one day, I rarely take the time to see the beauty.

This is the wallpaper on one of my computers with a 24" monitor and 1920 x 1200 resolution. The picture looks just fantastic.

Due to my newly calibrated monitor, I saw that the colors in this picture are way to bright and over-saturated. Therefore, please head over to www.dominickamp.de/wallpaper/ and download the updated, much better version! You're welcome! :D
