Life Returns

September 16th, 2009

Taken while visiting Lake Mountain, Australia, where a bushfire ravaged that part of the world last summer. Nature is growing back amidst the black charred trunks, leaves are starting to grow back, and life is returning.

Yes, it is a very nice picture, visually and technically correct, but on the desktop it does not look very good, as the eye is directed with a lot of energy towards the in-focus part of the flower, which is kinda stressful.

I must concur with the others. I like the composition, the subject matter and the back story but the depth of field in this instance is much to shallow. Personal note: we in the US are mucking with the natural 'fire cycle' much to our detriment.

I love the flower, but I'm not so keen on the background. Not too bothered about the noise, as it's a nice crisp photo. :)

most of the time i dont care much for the authors' pointless dribble that usually accompanies the posted submissions, however in this case it helps me like the picture. a new life comming out of ashes. how often do you see that?

unique perspective without making me dizzy. black and red is a popular color combination in graphic design, and for a good reason. yet you wont find it that easily in nature. i would increase the saturation a bit, but otherwise its thumbs up from me.

I particularly do not like this kind of composition. Perhaps because there is only one object, and a blurry black background. But is your style and I understand. Thanks for posting.

In terms of colour contrast this picture could work if only the focusing allowed me to see more of the flower crisply. As it is, it sets the eyes 'hunting' for the right focus, which of course one can't ever do on a fixed picture. For that reason I can't properly enjoy this composition (it looks far better in its thumbnail format, which minimises the blur until you open it to some measure of disappointment). This could have been so much better.

I agree with Burn. And I would add that while normally I don't like blurred images, this one works for me. Because most of what is blurred is actually so dark, it doesn't screw with my eyes like any other brighter color would. And, while I wonder if I might actually prefer this one oriented to the center, this is still something I'll gladly add to my wallpaper folder.

Love it. Thanks for sharing. I wasn't too hot on your Vineyard image but I think you've thoroughly redeemed yourself with this one. Oh, and thank GOD it's not another sunset.

I'm surprised that so many have commented on their dislike for this composition. I view my desktop as a window, so I keep it very clean with only a background - and this is perfect for it.

The focus is on a moment, much like the eye sees. Well done.

It seems that I disagree with most here, because I really love this wallpaper. The color is stunning and the asymmetry makes it interesting. Great job!
