Soap Bubble Rainbows

March 17th, 2010

This was taken for the photography club at my school. It is green Palmolive dish soap on a cup. The color is natural and comes from the soap refracting the light from the SB-600 flash.

Nikon D90, reversed 35mm f/1.8, SB-600 with umbrella.

While the lower part of the image certainly looks nice, the upper part simply ruins the image for me. The reflections of both camera and umbrella as well as the overall coloring of the image are not very beneficial.

I think the image is very unique, given that it was taken in photography club. Keep it up!

Great job. Unique is always good. I do, however, wonder if there was a way to eliminate the hand & camera from the print - once I saw it, I couldn't really *not* see it anymore.

What was the assignment/objective?

Very cool pic. Bubbles are nice! Keeps up the variety on IFL as well as on my screensaver rotation :)

Good work.

To those who don't like the colors in the image, why not just desaturate it in your photo editor of choice?

This is a very nice image that is actually somewhat refreshing from all the landscapes (though I do love those too :) Thanks, and please keep submitting more!

@BlackGary, that's acceptable; everyone's allowed an opinion and you gave justification so I won't argue with you. The color is not enhanced and actually caused banding in the sRGB colorspace.

@BJBProd, I think uniqueness is something IFL is struggling with recently so I decided to see if a little different of a piece would make it. I am glad it got voted through. Thanks.

@Lerch, Thanks for the comment. Glad you like it.

@Farscape, Not sure what you mean but ugly and cute don't seem to go together.

@Firefly.serenity, I didn't notice my hand and camera before, but you're right; now it's hard to miss. It's a simple clone out in Photoshop but I don't think the admin will update the wallpaper if I do the quick touch up. The assignment was very generic--"color."

@Tel me Later, Thanks for the compliments. The color was the point of this image but I guess some people just won't like it.

@Ferris, I hope that's not sarcastic :)

@Frostmint, I submitted another different shot of bubbles so check it out in the Loupe soon (whenever they post it there). It should be more of a crowd pleaser now that I read the comments and received some feedback on the shots you guys like.

@Vue-Man, thanks.

@Firefly.serenity, I forgot to mention, this is not the image I selected for the theme "color." There was another in the set that had the rainbow refractions more centered. It was submitted as well to IFL but not chosen.

i like it. But i agree with some comments above. The rainbow effect in the top right takes away a bit from the photo. But i like it nonetheless. :) keep posting

Love it. If it weren't for a few commenters pointing out the camera, it would still be on my desktop. I you have an edited version w/out camera & finger I would really like it!

@eholmes, I was actually shooting for the rainbow affect. It's okay though, I can understand the distraction.

@Eknirb, dunno what's wrong. Care to elaborate?

@Darkdayz, nice song, thanks for the link and compliments.

@TheBlindBandit, I've uploaded the two highest resolutions:

I might be wrong, but I think in this situation and with the angles involved, this is not a refractive event producing the colors. It is rather an reflective/interference phenomenon. The top a bottom layer of the very thin bubble surface both reflect light back to the observer. The reflected waves interfere with one another producing a reverse rainbow.

Nice submission regardless of the physics!
