I've always kept an open mind about abstract wallpapers on this website, even though they're not my "cup of tea". This, however, could have been created with 2 minutes on a program like paint.net using a simple brush tool. No effort went into it's creation, and it's not nice to look at either. To put it quite simply, this is a disgrace..

@^

As hideous as it may look, it's fractal. I doubt that the picture can be created by using *simple* brush.

Someone may like this but for some reason it's just not cutting it for me. I am pretty open to all sorts of art. As stated previously I believe more effort could be used here. I don't know how much time went into this particular work. I am not trying to bash anyone's art but it's just not my taste. That's my two cents.

You probably can't do something like this with paint.net but it does look like it was created quickly using a fractal generator. People have been spoiled by Apophysis flames which have an almost 3D look to them so the 2D Mandelbrots look dated. There just isn't much here to set it apart from the millions of other fractal renders out there.

I'm not sure "the Loupe" is the best idea for a site like this. It's nice to build community but consistent quality is what made IFL great and that came from editorial control over the submissions. Perhaps a weighed system is the answer?
about 13 years, 11 months ago
@ digitalblesphemy... I agree with you. I don't know whether it's stictly run by "the Loupe" system. I was under impression it was both but I may be wrong. I don't remember seeing this in the loupe though.

I'm not even going to try to be diplomatic ... This is utter rubbish. Sorry.

Like digitalblasphemy, I'm far more inclined to trust the wisdom of whomever was picking the wallpapers before The Loupe. There has to be some quality control. The voting system can be easily bombarded (i.e. "hey guys go vote for my pic at interfacelift! thx") via forums, etc.

It has a certain charm about it I`m not sure I`m crazy about it but I applaud the brave spirit in submitting such an item.
Without a degree of risk like this wallpaper what is art anyway ? just the same, always the same no change no innovation.

The Loupe must be changed. There were so many more pictures that were WAY better than this in the Loupe, and from the comments here, it looks like the regulars of this site didn't even vote for this. I know I didn't. I visit here to see awesome pictures/renders and learn from people better than me on how to make these kind of photos/renders possible. But this...

There are extremely beautiful wallpapers on The Loupe. I doubt that people chosen this on The Loupe.

This wallpaper is the best example why the loupe doesn't work! Admin, I'm sure with your photographic expertise you wouldn't let something like this slip through the loupe! Why didn't you intervene?

For those that are personally offended when a wallpaper you don't like is featured, we have the Loupe Downloads option.

http://interfacelift.com/account/loupe_downloads/

Please use it. You never have to miss out on a submission that fits your personal tastes but, for whatever reason, is not selected by your fellow visitors and our algorithm.

The "not my cup of tea" comments are not terribly insightful. That being said, we hear your feedback and are constantly adjusting how the site works.

When given the choice of offering some variety now and then and pleasing the vocal minority's thirst for sameness, we're shifting more towards variety moving forward. Keep in mind that votes and comments are generally not representative of the desires and download habits of the site's population as a whole.

Luke, thank you for a well written response! I totally agree with you. This is the best website out there in the whole world wide web in my opinion and enjoy coming here daily. It seems to me that you just can't please some people. We have had people in the past whine about not being part of the selection process... you guys went an extra mile to add a wonderful feature which is known as the "Loupe" now and now we have people complain about this feature. One thing everyone needs to understand is that there are thousands of visitors here with all sorts of personal tastes. There are people like myself that cannot get enough sunset and landscape images and there are people that totally hate sunset images... etc. We as users have to be more appreciative of all the wonderful content that is available on this fantastic website. You and I may not like this image but there may be dozens or even hundreds that like this image obviously hence why we see it here.

I just wanted to express how much I appreciate this website and to personally thank everyone who is involved to in creating this phenomenal community. Keep up your great work.

This background isn't for those of you who must have a photo for a background all the time. I love all of the great photos here at IFL, but sometimes I like some simple 2d pattern or something. This is for people who like to have the same type of variety in your wallpaper cycle. If you don't like it, nobody will make you download it. However I must say the preview looks like the image I submitted, but the full-size is grossly over-saturated. It doesn't have the subtle color blends that I was going for. This seems very odd to me. In fact the over-saturated version kinda hurts my eyes... yikes!

Luke, thanks for piping in. Variety is the spice of life, people! And, as you all know, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication, according to one particular trendsetter...

I'm not crazy about this, but I urge all members to beware the "what-makes-art-good" conversation, unless you have lots of time to spare...

I'm all for this if only because it's a deviation from the norm.

I admire the depth of this image. It would have been on my desktop if the newest one had not been there. Maybe I'll come back to this when I'm tired of the current newest one above this.

So Moderator, basically... since the download habits of the site are different from that of those who post, you're going to allow images like this to come through, not listen to your users, and simply say: "Yeah we're listening, but we have enough traffic to keep the site going without you guys, so whatever."

Really?? Awesome. Good for you. If all of the images were this poor, though, you would have no traffic, no download habits to keep track of, and hence nobody's complaints to ignore. I guess you could just get by (for now) on the backlog of images you already have, which is impressive to say the least...but in the end, the site would never grow and eventually fade away with stuff like this regularly making it through The Loupe .

And firefly.serenity...wow man, thanks for the wisdom. Variety is the spice of life, sophistication in simplicity (thus implying your own), and deviation from the norm. What a cultured soul you must be..

So, am I right in thinking that nobody has voted for this in the Loupe, it's just at the mods discretion that this crud makes it through ?
I'm all for variety but, come on, this is Photoshop 101 with awful colours. There is plenty of variety on the Loupe, why was this chosen ?

people tend to forget that these wallapers are free and don't oblige you to anything. you don't like it - you don't download it - you don't put efforts into putting the one who uploaded somethig you don't like down. this simple.
about 13 years, 11 months ago
@nordcz you might want to read what i wrote more carefully.

@Clyde this was not mods discretion

Isn't art fantastic in the way that it arouses such passion in people? nordcz, this piece in particular must have really affected you to produce a reaction like that!

Thanks for the wallpaper salvis! I don't mind a little diversity. As for the new loupe download section, I think that will motivate more people to vote for their favorite photos (so they can download them later), and therefore let the loupe have "better" of more accurate results. Nice!

I think a possible fix (and perhaps this is how it works already) would be for the moderators to decide what makes it into the Loupe. Then no matter what the audience votes as "best" a minimum level of quality will be maintained.
