Pier in France

March 30th, 2010

Now living in Montpellier, France with my girlfriend, we took a trip to Barcelona over the weekend. On our way back, about 45 minutes from Montpellier, we took this photo off the main road back. There were many bats flying around and it was very spooky!

Canon EOS 7D, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8.

great use of light, and love the impression of the cities lights appearing to be afire. instantly went into my desktop background.

Very cool! The moon is incredible and the atmosphere is really spooky!

I appreciate your effort however there are obvious traits of over-processing in terms of tone mapping. You can clearly see halos around the wooden jetty and the whole image looks flat as it was all composed of mid tones. There are plenty of shadows at night but this image does not show them. It is very difficult to achieve realistic night HDR image. I came to conclusion that it's almost impossible. I have seen a few which were ok but to achieve realistic reproduction of the scene that is balanced and not flat you have to manually blend exposures.

Very nice. I really enjoy nighttime shots. I only wish your exposure hadn't been so long so the image was slightly darker.

Thanks for the comments everyone!
In regards to the lack to harsh shadows, I really didn't want to achieve "perfect" reproduction of the scene, as when I was standing there I couldn't see jack crap out there in the landscape. The camera was able to pick up more than I could see. I still wanted to make it looks a bit spooky and ominous, and I did do some manual burning and dodging (this was by no means a cookie-cutter, one-click HDR!) and I did a lot of noise-reduction, sharpening, a little blurring and some levels stuff too. I told my girlfriend BEFORE I took the shot... "Babe, this ones going on Interface-LIFT!" haha... Thanks for the votes! :)

hi all,
i am living just there...
On the picture you can see the lake "bassin de thau" and the city "Sete" (Mont Saint Clair).
The picture has been taken from a location between "Bouzigues" city and "Meze" city.
From another location, by night, city lights of "Sete" are showing a whale!
try google...

Nice effect. The pier says distance, the city lights embers and the sea calm and strength. Maybe a home coming in the making.
