The Stare
By Sree
April 6th, 2010
I took this photograph in Phoenix Zoo, Arizona, USA on 28th March 2010.
This is from my second wildlife photography album. I was testing out my new Canon EOS 7D! I was shooting in continuous mode and the tiger looked at me for just a fraction of a second, when it heard the shutter sound!
Canon EOS 7D, Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM. Adobe Lightroom 2.6, Adobe Photoshop CS4, Focal Point 2.

Very good picture, but I am feeling odd with the effect on the high light zones: perhaps too much sharpening/contrast?

Looks like a lot of folks liked this one including myself. This came through pretty quick. I believe this is perfect. The subject is well lit and the background is wonderful. The light here really makes this shot. Keep it up!

my focus point(spot AF) was on the nose instead of the eye and I used only f4, should have used 5.6 ...the tiger is in perfect focus...the grass(which is sharp) is in the focus plane right below the tiger's nose...
this was the first time I used focal point 2...the editing part was not that good :(

Something strange about this picture makes it look like the cat was superimposed. Around the top of the head just doesn't look right to me for some reason, like it was cut out. Maybe it is just the lighting and exposure that did this. Other than that it is a magnificent looking animal and it is so cool to get any creature to seem like they are posing for you. Years ago I took a roll of black and white film to the San Francisco zoo and they were the best looking pictures I ever shot. A zoo is a great place to capture a variety of locations and subjects in such a small area.

I am still a beginner to photography and this was the first time I used Focal Point 2...so this is post-processing gone bad :(
after this image I practiced on some other photographs and i am a bit better with focal point now...
the image is absolutely real nothing artificial about it...this is not a superimposed cat...ha ha

Nobody in history has ever picked up a camera and became an instant expert. It takes time and you learn a LOT from posting in places like this. When I was into photography almost 30 years ago I started on a Pentax k-1000 which is not the easiest camera to use but I enjoyed it because you learned a lot from doing everything manually. Then there was that extreme cost of film developing. Digital media has forever changed things so use it to your advantage and have fun.
Either way it is still a cool looking tiger to have stare you down with a look that says "I can eat you if I want but then I would have to get up"

amazing photography! even though your still at your basics, this is moment worth capturing for any photographer....a job well done. it is indeed a photo which captivates the viewer and by a wordless gesture which silently hums, " i am not harmless - be warned" :-)
a job well done! cheers.
i guess the lighting and the background effect by better focus...
