Sunset Avenue

April 14th, 2010

In 2009, I spent Christmas at the southern-most point of Africa: Cape Agulhas. I was eager to see another amazing sunset as I did so often being in Africa for a couple of months. However, there was a big layer of clouds covering the whole sky and I was pretty disappointed. That was when the idea for this shot struck me. There was this small strip just over the horizon where the Sun illuminated the clouds, restrained by the Atlantic ocean below and the thick layer of clouds above. I exposed for the sunlight and left everything else pitchblack to achieve this result.

Canon EOS 40D, Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, ISO 200, 1/800 second, 44mm, f/8. Post-processing in Adobe Lightroom 2 with finishing touches in Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Very stark and dramatic effect, nicely done! You are pretty fortunate to have such a rich environment to shoot!

Not your "typical" sunset shot - and is fantastic as my new desktop. Thanks for capturing this stark and captivating contrast between night and day. How may more Africa gems do you have in store? ;-)

thx for your feedback. Happy you like this creative shot.
@ifireun: well, take a look at the loupe - just submitted six more two days ago. Sometimes when I look through the photos I think: Hey, that would also make a great wallpaper if you crop it like that and... you get the idea =)

Something's missing from this. Some pure white light I guess. But I love it anyway. My first thought was Dune.

'Laughs' Iraimbilanja right on man. 'Plays the theme from Dune 1980'

I would love to visit south Africa someday. :)
Nice shot man, I love the colors, its so... earthy!

While I appreciate the shot, I found this particular image difficult to look at. I would have preferred a bit more detail in the foreground. Still, it must have been amazing to see this first-hand.
