Do I want a picture of an ape on my desktop? No I do not.

Do other people? I suppose so, because this thing made it to the front page.

Again, a great picture, but wow, I just can never see myself using it as a desktop.

I think this is a great photo..clear, nice colors, strange subject..maybe a lot of us won't put it on their desktops, but there's no reason to criticize it..people voted fot it consequently now it's here..this is democracy :)

Fun. A great wallpaper for your work PC when you're leaving for greener grass elsewhere...LOL

Great portrait with a great lens but I can't see this suitable for my wallpaper. My little one will cry if he sees my desktop and I think my wife may have a nightmare... lol. Great work though.

It does make you somewhat wonder about the loupe system though. I wonder who voted for this. I don't even remember seeing this anywhere in the loupe. Next time I think someone needs to upload a giant tarantula or a scorpion to complete the theme of recent submissions. I guess I am not a fan of having creepy things on my desktop but I guess there are folks that may like that? I don't know.

Come on, people! You're missing the awesome prank potential of this wallpaper! It would take two seconds to throw this onto a co-worker's computer for them to see when they come back from lunch! :)

I agree with all - great photograph, but it's probably not going to stay up on my machine for very long.

Igor, if ANYONE posts a picture of a giant tarantula, we're going to have problems :) Ha!
Posted By: Philippe Clairo

The reason why this photo has become a wallpaper is mainly because the rest of the submissions in the loupe is of poor content and quality.
I agree when people say it might not be their wallpaper, and the only way I can explain it is because they probably see themselves in it :-)
Congrats SingExpat, your photo is great!

Speaking of a prank I was thinking same thing. I will try it on my co-worker today :) That should be hilarious!

Holy-Man-of-the-Forest, Batman!! Doesn't any one here love animals. Orangutans are one of my favorites--especially the babies. I don't care if this image doesn't make a good desktop; these creatures are fantastic. Thank you SingExpat for such a great photo. It's cropped beautifully (1680x1050).

Cemimo,

"I just dont get it! There are so many beautiful wallpapers in the loupe and all we get is a big staring monkey?"

The orangutan is not a monkey; it is an ape. It is one of the five great apes, viz., chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans and humans.

I hope "Big Poppa" doesn't read this forum or you're in for big trouble. ;)

@ onis_uk ... I wouldn't be so quick to say that the loupe failed. It's obvious that some folks liked it. I like it but it's just not for my desktop. It's not too family friendly for me at this point. It did not fail as a wallpaper for at least 7 people that marked this as a favorite and more users that have downloaded it. It's same as saying democracy failed. I would gladly take democracy over dictatorship with having experience of both political systems.

Stu wins the thread. What's wrong with celebrating our primate cousins once in a while? I know, clear violation of the Rules For The Desktop, but this might make a zoologist's day.

Ok, Stubulman. I'll be the one to jump inside your trap: I am not an ape!
Humans are different family, species, ... everything!
about 13 years, 10 months ago
Mandibul... I just noticed Stubulman's comment. I totally disagree with Stub. Apes were never part of my genealogy I have nothing against them but that theory is a joke. I am not even going to start any evo debate. It's pointless. One question I always have for evo backers if indeed humans evolved from apes... what the heck are apes still doing on this planet now? Apes are too primitive in comparison to most humans.

Ha ha, Igor. "I am not even going to start any evo debate. It's pointless."

But then you go on to pose a question, naturally leading to a debate? C'mon.

Let's all leave this one as is. It's a neat photograph. It's a neat wallpaper for those who like this sort of thing (like brizkit's zoologist friends) and it's just neat. That's all.

Religion, politics and, of course, evolutionary theory are all off-limits at my weekly poker game. Perhaps we should do the same here at IFL? :)

Excerpted from http://anthro.palomar.edu/primate/prim_7.htm

The apes and humans are members of the same superfamily, the Hominoidea. Until the last few years, humans were separated into their own family within this superfamily because it was believed that we are significantly different from the apes. However, recent genetic studies and discoveries from the fossil record have made it clear that some of the apes are more similar to humans than previously believed. Subsequently, the living hominoids are now commonly classified into only two families with humans grouped with the great apes...

I garnered my initial information from Wikipedia. Above is a corroborating source.

From my own college biology course, we were taught that men and then contradistincted apes were descended from a common ancestor. I don't think modern science ever taught that man was descended from the apes. This is a common misconception. It seems as if we are at least cousins. Certainly we are genetically very similar. If you don't believe in genes, then perhaps we're not related. That's your prerogative.

Peace to all.

Igor, if you spent a tenth of the time reading about evolution that you do on photography, you might understand that nowhere does evolutionary theory state that humans evolved from apes - this is such a basic misunderstanding, schoolboy stuff. No I take that back, most school children probably understand the basics.

I am still trying to figure out how this is not a "family friendly" photo ... its a picture of one of nature's amazing creatures, not bloody body parts or something :P My kiddos watch the Discovery channel regularly and would love this image :) It may not be desktop material for me, but its a great shot.

Most people are saying either its a great photo, or apes are awesome, which I will agree this is a good portrait, but the website even capitalizes "lift" in interfaceLIFT. These are supposed to be great WALLPAPERS not just great PHOTOS. Good portrait:yes. Wallpaper: I don't like things looking back at me all the time. I should just upload my family Christmas card photo and it will be front paged within the first 12 hours then people will comment "Not my cup of tea, but wow great photo and family!" Naw, it'd never get through the Loupe.

Oh wait and I can just keep making more accounts and tell everyone in my forum to sign up and vote on the picture so yeah it will be front paged.

Stubulman ~ "The orangutan is not a monkey; it is an ape. It is one of the five great apes, viz., chimpanzees, bonobos, gorillas, orangutans and humans."

Please do not include humans into that category until evolution goes from theory to a factual science. As far as I still know the theory has gaps and is still very incomplete. I myself cannot still see me evolving from anything, I have a mind, a free-will and a soul with which I live. I am not driven by a "million" year old instinct, instead I am driven to exceed, to supercede that which binds me. I am driven to be perfectly happy. :D

End of Line

Igor isn't evolved from apes ? LOL. I have to now agree with the comment made about him being arrogant. He must feel so superior to these silly creatures !
Evolution may not be proven science fact, but then again, neither is climate change. So it's pick your theory and run with it. I'll take Darwins and reject the climate change bozo's.

As for Igor's comment "Apes are too primitive in comparison to most humans." Most humans ? hahaha. I think not.

This is still a GREAT pic, btw.

Wow. I just got back from the bar and checked this to see what the latest wallpaper was-- I thought it was too late for this shot to have a chance of making it.

Normally, I would probably be a little miffed by some of the comments here-- but I had a chance to blow off some steam tonight and just have to laugh.

I would like to make a few points-- my opinions, of course, but I think they have some validity.

1/ First off, I don't believe there is one "type" of picture that is good for a desktop wallpaper. I'm sorry, but you can have images on your desktop that do not include vistas of the open sea in front of the setting sun. There is more to photography than landscape photos. Get over it.

2/ Secondly, I'm not a big animal hugger myself, but I have a certain amount of respect and admiration for them-- from an aesthetic point of view and otherwise. Therefore, I can't help but wonder why people are repelled by this beautiful orangutan. It isn't creepy. It isn't scary. It's a beautiful animal. Frankly, if you are repelled by it, perhaps you should think about the reasons why.

3/ Lastly, as an example of wildlife photography, I think this image passes muster. Granted, I'm not a professional, but the quality of this image is not bad at all-- and, to be honest, I think my assessment is fairly conservative. For those of you who disagree, I suggest you take a three-hour trip to your local zoo and see how many photos you can take that meet this -- admittedly modest-- level of quality. Can you capture the beads of sweat on your subjects face? Have fun trying.

I need to go hit the hay now, but I'm going to be sure and upload a favorite picture of mine tomorrow-- it's of a very cool-looking spider I came across yesterday in the Botanic Garden here. I'm sure you'll all enjoy it.

Best regards from SingExpat.

Hello Marden,

- I think you are confusing taxonomy with evolution--they are not synonymous.

"I am not driven by a "million" year old instinct, instead I am driven to exceed, to supercede that which binds me. I am driven to be perfectly happy."

- How do you know that the above qualities you evince are not the product of your genetics? "Fish gotta swim, birds gotta fly," to quote Jerome Kern.

- The theory of gravity is incomplete, but I've fallen off my bicycle enough times to know it's there.

More later, my just came home and it's time for lunch.

Peace to all.

Marsen, scientific theory *IS* factual science! It does not mean that every single detail about it is known, but it's accepted that it has/does occur - just like gravity and the big bang. Just to be clear, climate change is NOT scientific theory (yet).

I did not wanted to jump in but I just could not hold myself and this will be my last post regarding the topic. I am amazed at how ignorant evolution fanatics could be most of the time. They always try to shove their fictitious agenda into everyone throats. Most people know that evolution theory is not universally accepted or proven to be absolute truth but there may be some merit to it. With that being said everyone is entitled to their own views, opinions and believes and trying to make others to accept your views is plain ignorant. Not everyone worships that bozo darwin. I'll just leave it at that.

As I said before this is one fantastic portrait that has been executed flawlessly... but in our family we don't find them very appealing on our desktops especially having a tiny baby in my household. So that's what I meant when I said it's not too family friendly meaning my family would not be pleased with it. Now a panda bear would be a different story. Anything cute goes well in my house. Anyway keep up good work. Cheers.

Thanks Igor. I disagree on the picture, but I also must say that I agree that it is wise to approach Darwin, or any scientist, with a critical mind, especially when the establishment "experts" desperately want one to just shut up and spout the established dogma...

Igor, as a scientist I am disheartened to find you think evolution and any other theory is merely a belief or opinion and a fictitious agenda. Also, to suggest that Darwin is a bozo smacks of ignorance and your recently displayed arrogance.
Sir, you should perhaps just stick to your CS5 and photography, and leave science to those who understand it and do the research.
Remember, this is a wallpaper site.

The good thing about science is it's not based on opinions but on emperical evidence. If you think the evidence is wrong then supply your own evidence that supports your argument. And no, calling a scientist a 'bozo' doesn't count, as intelligent as that is.
