Apocalypto

May 21st, 2010

This is a digital composition of one of my Corsica shots from April 2010. The sky has not been altered apart from the white lit part on the left and some color and contrast editing.

The lower part is a digital reflection with ripples. If you've got any questions regarding the process, please feel free to ask.

Nikon D700, AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, ƒ/4.5, ISO 400, Adobe Photoshop CS5, ACR 6.1.

Awesome desktop :D

Everyone PLEASE vote for Macindows' Loupe submissions. You can see them by clicking on his name, and then look under "Loupe Submissions:". I am in no way associated with Macindows but in my opinion, they are the best submissions currently on this website.

Excellent work, thanks :)

@Frostmint
Please don't tell me who or what to vote for. Macindows has some great submissions and his work nearly always gets on the main page but I don't need you "advising" me. I hope Macindows makes that clear, too.

Great picture, but it would have been better without the line, which is completely " computerish " at the first look.

@Clyde
I see no problem in commenting about the other works from the author of a wallpaper. I am not telling you to vote for anything, I am suggesting that you do so.

Also, I can't ever remember referencing you in my comment. Consider any other comments to have absolutely nothing to do with you.

This looks great as usual Dominic! Awesome work here buddy. The flood plug-in did pretty realistic rendering and the colors are Apocalyptic so you have achieved the goal. I am partially split on the effect of that downward beam as it stands right now. I think the current beam may be a little too defined it almost looks like a giant lazer out of the sky. When I get home I will play with that beam possibly making it a bit wider and with fuzzier edges and will try removing to see what happens. I do like the idea though. Actually you know what this reminds me of my friend from Italy Giuseppe Parisi's "the time portal" work ( www.flickr.com/photos/roger_taylor_85/4127843584/ ).

Thanks guys! Yeah, I thought so too when I created the beam that it looked a bit too clean. I actually got the idea of the beam from a picture called "Deliverance" by Karezoid from Deviantart. (http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/5130/deliverancebykarezoid.jpg)

I really like the beam from Giuseppe's Time Portal picture. It looks very powerful! However, guys like him are also very talented with hand painting an image. I wish I had some of that talent! ;-)

I remember looking at this on your website a month or so ago and thinking that it should be posted here on IFL. Well, here it is! :)

@SaberClash: THAT'S where I remember seeing this. I've been looking at it thinking, "I know I've seen this before," yet knowing that Macindows wouldn't rip off somebody's work. It was his Apocalypse piece I was thinking of, which has that same beam thing going on.

Looks really good, but in my opinion it would be better without the beam, but still an awesome wallpaper.

Nice pic! What app did you use to make the water effect ? thx!

Herr Meister, Is the beam shooting upwards, downwards or bidirectionally?

@Stubulman:
:-D When I created the image I thought of the beam shooting upwards into the sky. But after thinking about it, it could also shoot from above onto the earth. Maybe an UFO or some Independence Day space ship?

@BriceDew:
I used this tutorial for "displacement water":

Awesome picture!

But would be a lot better without the beam.
