Second Beach Sunset

May 23rd, 2010

This shot looks out towards Vancouver Island from Second Beach in Stanley Park. I've always wanted to come down here and take a decent shot of the sunsets but I never got around to it, until today! I got lucky, as a couple had set up a tent on the beach just as I arrived, I'm sure they enjoyed the sunset too!

For this shot, I did a 5 bracket HDR (-2,-1,0,+1,+2). I used Photomatix to process the HDR image, and then I sharpened the image a little with Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Nikon D300s, Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8, Manfrotto 190XB & 486RC2 Ballhead. Shot @ 11mm, f/8, ISO100.

Tent + what appears to be oil tankers makes a not so great desktop. I'm sorry.

You already have 7 favorites. It seems rather clear that you gimped the system to get this photograph on the front page. Someday, Interfacelift may eventually manage to figure out a better way of getting a desktop truly democratically elected to the front page.

I'm confused - why did you do so much bracketing and HDR only to have the foreground silhouetted?

Yea the tent doesn't make it look nice, i don't have a problem with the boats. Its a real nice picture apart from the tent.

I agree with the previous comments the tent doesn't look right in this otherwise nice picture.

I voted this because of the interesting low clouds. I did not notice the HDR in the foreground when voting.

I don't believe this required all the HDR work. I think there is not enough draw in the foreground and the overall exposure could have been better served with a gradient filter.

Ditto all the previous comments... This is one fantastic scene and the image but HDR processing here was not necessary since the foreground is pretty distracting and is not adding any interest to already fantastic background considering the clouds and color. I am sure I can burn the foreground via photoshop into the silhouettes like it should have been from the start.

To sum it up like I said this is a fantastic wallpaper but HDR simply does not do any justice here. HDR does not work for every scene and photographer have to carefully determine that in the field or during digital darkroom. Apart from HDR you did fantastic work so I am not going to complain about it much since I know this should be an easy fix in any image editor. Cheers.

I'm afraid I have to approve.

Sky, clouds, mountains, sea, boats... all looks amazing. But I agree that HDR might not have been necessary here.

Also, funny place to camp, especially if that's really oil or mud :)

Good job on the photo. I do have to say though even on the thumbnail, the tent is an unfortunate distraction... I suppose the photo could just be cropped and then use Photoshop to blot out the ships. A simple process. But again, good job!

loupe fail............yet again !

If I may be so deluded: I believe I am to blame for the Loupe. It was introduced just a couple weeks after my comment here, sans fee:

http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/details/1719/ambury_sunset.html

"I wonder why IFL doesn't set up a special membership section where we can see all the new submissions coming in and rate them? Then the ones that get a certain amount of votes are greenlit onto the main site (sort of like Fark articles)? I wouldn't mind ponying up a monthly or annual fee to get total access. Or just give us some non-monetary incentive to join, like anyone who submits a photo or two can be a member? This would effectively demolish the sunset complaints and probably provide a greater variety due to collective moderation. Mm?"

That's not to say the Loupe isn't awesome. It is. You guys are all looking at the history of IFL submissions through rose-colored glasses.

Let me put this in caps: PEOPLE WERE BITCHING ABOUT SUBMISSION QUALITY LONG BEFORE THE LOUPE WAS IMPLEMENTED. Use the archives here to do some research if you don't believe me. There's nothing wrong with this new system -- it's you.

I don't understand the tent hatred, anyway. I've camped in several places in the Pacific Northwest. It's beautiful. What's with everyone pretending humans aren't a product of nature? Blast this photo for the right reasons, please (they exist).

this could all be fixed by letting people see full size versions on the loupe instead of voting for a picture that looks good small but full size shows up all its flaws! no matter what you say the loupe HAS lowered the quality of home page pictures FACT !

Hey all,

Thanks for the critique! I'm still learning, I'll take note of everything! To be honest I didn't even think about the ships and how distracting they were until you guys mentioned it.

I like the tent, personally, but to each their own! Hopefully my next submission won't be as bad!

p.s. Frostmint, I didn't "gimp" anything heh. Sorry you think that.
