Old Oak
By micles
July 30th, 2010
Few days ago i went to shoot some oaks in nice place called Rogalinek (in Poland). The best light is just before sunrise, so i was there about hour and a half before it. No filters were used, just a tripod and a small amount of post-processing, mainly in Lightroom. Photoshop only for removing one dot of dust from the sensor.
Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Samyang 14mm f/2.8, Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop.

The bottom left of the picture is kinda blurry, otherwise I think this is a really cool and different wallpaper :)

not the best thing on loupe (assuming it was there), but still a solid shot. the 'before sunrise' feel has been nicely captured, although it's a little cold and eerie, maybe too eerie for a desktop. but it can't be denied an atmosphere.

Looks like one of the trolls are back. This is absolutely breathtaking. I voted for this and the one before this the moment I saw them. Flawless composition of this wonderful atmospheric moment in our marvelous nature. Bravo!Fantastic work. Thanks for sharing this beauty.

Great shot! I voted for this one!! But on the loupe, I didn't notice the striped sky (like wide gradient lines), possibly due to color filter. I don't like that! Anyway, very good job!!!

The banding in the sky is very distracting and ruins an otherwise usable photo. Someone buy Igor a new monitor.

i don't know if i'm the only one who noticed, but who did borisenko call a troll?? the author? i though these sorts of personal attacks would not be tolerated in here. or was that just his broken english? or was he really trying to insult someone?

@ SMFCIFL ... Yeah I noticed banding before but it does not ruin the wallpaper for me. It's not that distracting to me I suppose. I am sure that banding was not present in the original image. It has been discussed before and it's possibly IFL's compression issue of some sort. It does not bother me that much since I am not printing a poster out of this but it's simply a wallpaper on my laptop.

quicksand:
He called YOU a troll, and I agree with him. It seems that you have had something negative to say in every single one of your comments since the day you joined, and they all contradict your avatar. Did you pay for your IFL membership? I mean, if you don't like what you see here, then go look somewhere else; nobody is forcing you to be here. To be quite honest, I am absolutely sick of seeing your comments and I am very close to informing the webmaster just like I did with Burn Baby Burn and that more recent troll named bmdibbs or whatever his name was. Providing constructive criticism once in a while (especially when it was requested) is ONE thing, but you just keep posting one negative comment after another.
ANYWAY.... I love this one. It reminds me a little bit of some of TheReal7's work!

Come on guys. Pick your battles. In my opinion, what quicksand said this time around wasn't anywhere near offensive, relatively or overall. He just doesn't like the pic as much. I mean, did you catch where he said, "still a solid shot"? I certainly agree some of his previous remarks were tactless (though nowhere near on par with "he who must not be named" or bmdibbs), but it seems he made an effort to express his distaste in a nevertheless tasteful way. Perhaps we should give him some credit.

I agree guys it's just perception... This is all I saw... "not the best thing on loupe (assuming it was there)..." When you see that you just can't see anything credible after that. Especially the phrase in parentheses. What was he implying? IFL wrongdoing of some sort? I am just tired of all the twisted comments around here that offer absolutely nothing. I suppose I could just stop paying attention to the comment area and I think that would be a wise thing to do based from the past encounters. There are some really odd members in this wonderful community.
I am just happy to see some higher quality approved wallpapers lately since the loupe became my main source of decent quality wallpaper material when things went down the hill on the main page. I am so happy with the Loupe system IFL. Thanks!

trout - thanks man but i don't care for any credit, i just voice my opinion and move on. of course just like everyone else i smile at borisenko's pretentious ramblings, i mean the guy's so full of it, in the worst possible way to the point i'm oftentimes embarrassed for him, but i keep my mouth shut. i mean he's a perfectionist, you know.
but what i hate is this dimwit mentality like the twat above you has just demonstrated. he's agitated by me seeing something negative in the stuff he unconditionally adores, in fact it makes him 'sick', to the point of being 'very close to informing the webmaster'[:)))], and i should just get the hell out of here.
i mean, what kind of iq are we talking about here, you wouldn't expect someone that imbecile to be computer literate, would you? maybe he's got a helper monkey doing the typing for him...who knows? but what is he doing here in a photography forum disseminating this cretinism? i don't get it, it just feels so out of context....

Slow your roll, playa. No need to get truly offensive. Whether I agree or disagree, do we really need to inflammatory rhetoric? Just a suggestion, to be taken or left behind.

borisenko act 1:
"I am just tired of all the twisted comments around here that offer absolutely nothing."
borisenko act 2:
"This wallpaper is not all that impressive to me either it just doesn't cut it for me maybe next time."
:)) the guy's cracking me up

the thing just attacked me out of nowhere and i admit don't respond well to that. i don't care if he had a bad day, there was no reason for it.

I'm with Igor-screw the comments lately. Great photo, and even though the banding takes away from it a little, but when you look beyond what was clearly not part of the original photo it looks great.

Testing, testing. Tap, tap, tap. One, two, three, four--is this thing on?
Ladies and gentlemen, may I have your attention, please? There will be an indefinite moratorium on this nascent silliness and obstreperousness. This dyspeptic discourse is antithetical to aboriginal gestalt of this forum.
In other words: chill baby chill.

I'm not sure about this photo. It's very good but there are problems with it.
Igor says it's a "flawless composition" etc. He then promptly changes his tune in another post and admits there are flaws in it. Those comments completely discredit him as a self proclaimed "perfectionist" !
As the first poster states..the foreground is blurry. + the tree line is blurry. + the banding issue + the fact that it looks a bit like a radioactive swamp all detract from the obvious qualities.

Blurry bottom left corner - true. I didn't notice it on the 3"LCD. Maybe should close the Samyang aperture a little bit more (I think it wasn't on 2.8, concluding on the basis of quite big DOF (not like 2.8))
Cold and eerie - yep, that's right. But - it was like that, and I think this WB and the rest of postprocessing matches the mood of the scene.
Banding seems to be because of lack of contrast and high exposure of the sky in the RAW image. Strong pulling was there, so single bits of colors got out. I see it now, should have blurred it or maybe take second exposure set on the sky.
TheReal7 is some kind of master on the IFL? I'm new here - it's my first submission here, and i got to the main page - a real success for me :D

Micles congratulations on your approved submission! You did wonderful job. The blur works great for this wallpaper and for me banding is not as distracting as I have seen with some other images. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but those two alleged flaws are highly exaggerated by some; especially considering when this same crowd approaches extremely over processed wallpapers with all the glorious praises when in reality the image is totally ruined. Go figure that!

@psg, @trout
who do you download the small resolution versions? i always wondered who they were for. you'll buy a new notebook or a monitor with higher res and your wallpapers will be useless to you.
i always download the highest possible resolution regardless of my current monitor's res.
1. time-proofing
2. being able to zoom in makes you able to better examine - and appreciate - the shot

I think I'll stay out of the cat fight this time around. Anything I might say would only make things worse.
As for the image, the composition is excellent and the mood is striking. Whatever modest technical flaws there may be, while not beyond criticism, don't take away from the overall impact of the picture for me. I hope micles will not be discouraged by the sniping here from submitting more photos in the future. Although it's hard to tell for sure from just one sample, he apparently has a good eye that, I think, we should encourage - and tutor, when appropriate, with constructive criticism.
The banter, if we may call it that, on this forum is typical of what you find all over the internet, so I try not to take it too seriously - though sometimes I don't succeed in ignoring it as I should. But I do agree with trout - pick your battles. I might amplify that by saying pick no battles, but I couldn't follow my own advice so I won't say it. ;-)

Tim H. has put it most clearly:
why do people think they ought to drop negative comments?
to me it seems like being fundamentally spoiled by consumerist attitude: "I'm the consumer, I don't like this thing, no, no, take it away, brrr.. Maybe if this knob were yellow.. and that letter taller.. and this shape nicer.."
In a place like this, where people just Share with you, either post something kind, or run out to the street naked shouting "I don't like this picture!!!"
And better apply more or less contructive criticism to your own works.

Brando said, "Too many big words on this page for me." I use big words not because I am intelligent but because I'm pompous!
Let's enjoy the offerings here: look, listen, learn and teach. (More pomposity)
