Palacio da Pena

November 15th, 2010

Perched on a hilltop outside of Sintra, Portugal sits the Palacio da Pena. I chose to visit the Moorish castle on a hill opposite instead, where the views of the surroundings were just stunning. I hope you like it!

Canon 350D with kit lens; some work in Adobe Lightroom.

Subject matter is good, must be a nice place to visit.

What ISO did you take this at? The image is very grainy, and the foreground detail looks to be lost as a result of it (and the colours look very odd too). There is also some heavy vignetting in the sky, which creates a banding of colours (note the darkblue to cyan to light blue transitions). Did you add that vignette yourself? I find it hard to imagine that the lens would do that to such an extent.

Since you are using lightroom, and may perhaps not have access to HDR post-processing tools, using bracketing to get a decent dynamic range perhaps isn't an option for you. You could instead try and over expose the sky a little in order to get a better exposure on the foreground, considering it makes up a large part of the image. A circular polarizer might also help to darken the sky (and bring out the contrast), so long as you're not facing into the sun, where the light polarization is at a minimum.

Wow! I love how you can tell there isn't much post-processing that was done here, yet it's still an awesome shot! I love the composition and the way the clouds above the palace seem to curve around the structure. Thank you for this beautiful shot campra! This is another one of those photos that makes me want to do some traveling. =)

The lights on the rock in foreground are a little distracting but not much. There's a little bit of noise (in the sky mostly), but not enough to hinder the piece. Also, I would probably raise the overall saturation by a couple points, then on top of that selectively raise the saturation of the greens a couple more points, and maybe add some yellow to the greens as well. Once again, thank you campra! This is going straight into my wallpaper collection!

Great composition, great subject, great picture. I did make a few edits to fix some of the issues brought up by the commenters before me though and thought I'd share:

I do like the change in subject material. It's a beautiful view to capture.

However, I must agree completely with josephwm and Daddy_Gemini. paul.charles.uk's version really brings your capture to life. Using it as a wallpaper now.

Beautiful view! I love the lay of the land and the position of the castle it just flows well.

The photo is rather desaturated and I personally feel it'd do much to run some image enhancing to really liven up the colors. I also know that there's really nothing that could be done about this, but the two flood lights that are in the image kind of kill the experience. There's beauty here, but not in the flood lights.

Awesome capture, love the line-light from the clouds.

@paul.charles great job, i really prefer your version as a desktop. Not to take anything away from the submitter, but you really cleaned it up.
