Wallpaper Details: Arch In The Sky
Arch in the Sky
November 21st, 2010
While traveling to Bar Harbor, Maine, my brother and I visited Acadia National Park. This photo is taken at the highest point of the park, with the view on the bay. What makes this unique though, is that I'm back to the sun, which was in haze and created this arch in the sky because of light difusion through the clouds.
Canon 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L USM. Developed in Adobe Lightroom 3 and Adobe Photoshop CS4.
44°21'7.54" N, 68°13'25.47" W

A picture that cheers me up is a super picture. Well done.
The colors seem a tad unnatural, but it's still great.

Cool! So could you see that with your naked eye or just through the camera lens? The composition is nice, centered on the arch which works with this. Even though this one isn't in your top 10 I love a lot of your other work so keep it up! =)
I agree the vignetting is a tad over the top but I think that using it was a good choice. It appears that you applied the palette knife, paint daubs or the smart blur filters to this though, which makes it look almost painted. You may have done this because of the amount of noise in the original. Please correct me if I'm wrong, because maybe it's just the camera. It might have helped to selectively raise the yellow in the sky on the horizon but not on the foreground. I wish there was something more interesting in the foreground like a tree because it's kind of bland. Interesting sky none the less.

But I don't care for the vignetting, which is overly dramatic. Whether caused by the lens or added in post processing, the effect is unnatural. Admittedly some scenes need after camera adjustments to look their best, but it seems too many people just don't know when to stop. And that's the difference between art and artifice. At the point you can tell the image was manipulated, it becomes artificial. When special effects become common, they are no longer special.
