Creature of the Night

February 5th, 2011

I found this scary piece of driftwood on the beach today. Doesn't it look like some alien creature with two hooves, horns and a tail?

Nikon D700, Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED, f/2.8, ISO 400, 30 second exposure.

This is an extraordinarily beautiful photograph. The night sky and sand give it an amazing background. Please do submit more photographs like these. Absolutely gorgeous!

Stunning picture, great clarity. The stars and sand are just awesome.

That driftwood is disconcerting to say the least! It looks like some sort of grotesque monster.

Wow. Many people say good art can be interpreted in many different ways. I see a moose doing karate chops. Thanks for sharing.

Very interesting subject matter. Looks like the creature is getting down on the dance floor.

This image is simply surreal, love it! Very imaginative and well done. Truly diggin the colors in this picture!

Not a complaint really, just curious as to why so much vignette effect was used? Also wondering just how in the world you shot the night sky and got it to appear like that of a nasa image?

Was this taken at night with a long exposure? It sure looks that way.

Reminds me more of E.T. disco dancing... or maybe Mr. T doing some yoga, I'm not sure yet. I love it though! Thanks Dom! =)

This is an excellent shot!

I find the staging to be well thought out and the lighting perfectly executed. I am wondering if you were using a filter to get the milky way to appear so vividly. Please keep up the excellent work.

Thanks for all your kind comments! ;-)

The milky way has not been added in Photoshop but I brightened up the area and increased the contrast/saturation a bit so that it pops out a little more. Vignetting was due to the setting moon on the far right hand side. I just evened it out a little later on.
I placed the camera on a little piece of driftwood as I didn't have a tripod with me and tried a couple of different settings. One of the other images is exposed for almost 8 minutes but during a quick moment of inattention, a wave came so quickly that it drowned the bottom of my camera. These are the times where I'm glad to have a weatherproof sealing!

Oh, and by the way. This driftwood was soo heavy! I had to drag it for over 600 meters in order to place it on this tongue of beach. The actual size is almost 2m of height! Since I placed the camera pretty close to the object, I took two photos. One where I focused on the driftwood, and the other where I focused on the sky. Then I merged the two images in Photoshop and made sure that both, driftwood and sky, are sharp.

Wow. That is a great shot. Very good eye on your part. It really does have an alien theme to it. I only wish it had a bit more foreground at the bottom of the frame. Very nice shot though. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the information Dominic. I was wondering how f/2.8 got that much depth-of-field. 600m is a long way with something so unwieldy.

Wow, this is surreal. I put this on my desktop as soon as I saw it. The composition is amazing and vivid. Where the heck is this?

It looks like a man in the wind, and it's very simiular to this famous italian statue, even on the 20 Eurocent coin:

This is a very striking shot, I really love it! As a small thumbnail it almost looks like the driftwood has a human pose. Very cool.

This is an absolutely awesome image Dominic. Everything about it is standout, from composition, to lighting and exposure. One of my all time favs.

The first word that came to mind when I saw this was astonishing. It looks like something alive. It looks like nothing I've ever seen but has attributes that make it seen human and animal at the same time. To me, whatever my mind conjures up it seems like it's pleading or maybe beckoning to something out of shot on the right. I look at this and do not want to take my eyes off it.

Everything from the sky to the stones and pebbles on the beach add to this wonderful piece of photographic art and it is undoubtedly one of the most wonderful images I have ever seen in my life.

There are problems though. Sorry.

The horizon line behind what I call the front leg (on the right), the right side of the (back leg) are not matched to each other and are higher than the image which you focused on the sky.

There is also something two-thirds of the way across the horizon from the left side of the frame.

I am going to try to fix these, I want this image as my wallpaper.
