Moon Rise

April 14th, 2011

Inspired by an image taken from the International Space Station (ISS) in 1999. I was amazed by it but felt the quality was poor. So i created my own to use as my wallpaper and decided to share. I hope you like it :)

Adobe Photoshop CS4

Stellar—or should I say Lunar. This is one fine piece of work.

No need to change a thing. I feel as if I'm holding a camera itself on an EVA (Extra Vehicular Activity).

I LOVE the content. Just an amazing picture that I was quite anxious to use as my background...

However, the banding, which is sadly quite rampant, just ruins it. In fact, the banding is so bad it introduces pixelated artifacts in some places (there's probably a better description out there of what's going on in this picture, but that's the best I can do). Such a shame, cause this would otherwise be awesome.

It's pretty cool looking, looks almost real. The composition is spot on.

I think trout is talking about the look of the earth's atmosphere, it does look kinda stripey.

Only thing I would add would be more of a starfield.

great composition, and very nice color choice. looks like a real photo that could be taken from the ISS or something!

as caleb said, a bit more star presence would be nice. and in regard to the banding, blue-white gradients are notorious for having very noticeable banding. adding some noise to the photo does fix it, however not without altering the feel of it. if only gradients werent so fickle :p

Hey guys thanks for the comments, I know about the banding and i added the noise but it didnt really fix it at all then i tried upping the Bit, i tried gaussian blur but nothing got rid of it. Thing is when i was doing it 1st it wasent there but when i reopened the .psd file it was.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to go about making it better im all ears ;)
Thanks again.

Try fixing the banding in adobe bridge. Use the adjustment brush with clarity and sharpness all the way to the left(negative number). Brush over the banding and erase if you get any on the moon. You may have to do this twice by making a new adjustment. I did this on the banding for the sky and it appears to have fixed it. Of course it wiped out any star field. You can always add them afterwards.
