Queen Mary Falls

July 21st, 2011

Queen Mary Falls is a stunning waterfall southwest of Brisbane, Australia in Main Range National Park. Both the drive to this location and the waterfall itself are renowned for their beauty. This photo was taken at the end of a great day exploring the area. A tripod was used to hang the camera over the railing of the lookout area to take an unobstructed long exposure.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II, Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM, f/14, ISO 50, 3.2 second exposure. Edited with Adobe Lightroom.

I like this shot. It's nice and sharp and the perspective is pretty cool. Usually, you see waterfall shots from the bottom up. Nicely done!

Everything seems fine. The exposure is right, so are the colors and it's sharp throughout.

Beautiful shot jonpacker! Talk about vertigo, this angle makes me dizzy in a good way. So much depth in this not to mention very sharp and perfect contrast. At first I didn't like that little branch sticking out on the bottom, but I think it makes you really feel the height with it there.

The 16:9 ratios look better than the 16:10 ratios, so good thing I have the former. :P The reason the 16:10's aren't as good is because the fence and people at the top center in the frame (which I think you should have cloned out. Also, you may have went 1 or 2 points too far on the vignetting for my taste, but it's not too distracting. Thanks for this great shot!

Thanks Danny! It was a function of the location of the lookout. It hangs precariously out over the edge of the cliff, and provides easily the best position to view the waterfall.

Daddy_Gemini: Thanks for your feedback! I completely agree, the cement mixer and some of the construction works could have been removed. To be completely honest with you this was my first trip with the 5DII and my first IL submission, so it was a fast edit. I was not expecting it to be posted! A nice surprise. You are right on the Vignetting too, it is a bit heavy in the bottom left and right corners, or though that does aid in balancing the composition to my eye. Still, they could be lighter as you say. Cheers!
