There's a not so beautiful story behind that dry lake. One hundred years ago the Owens valley was a verdant land with prosperous farms and a large lake of fresh water. Then, in the 1930s the lake was tapped via canal to supply water to Los Angeles and the Owens valley began to die. This is not a natural scene but a man made desert of tragic dimensions.

That said, this photo captures the barren character of the land very effectively.
