Balloon over a Cornfield

June 6th, 2012

I took this shot during a balloon ride that my wife and I took during our anniversary. The morning sun was at our back as the pilot descended to skim over a cornfield. I thought that the shadow of our balloon was a nice contrast against the green of the cornfield. The natural color of the corn stalks was a little dull and so I adjusted the color and shadow levels with Picasa.

Nikon D3000, Google Picasa.

This could have been a nice picture but, you ruined it by over-doing the green of the corn. The contrast adjustment is also over-done such that the shadow looks like a black shape added by you when fiddling with the picture.

When will people like you learn to go easy on the post-processing, instead of ruining good pictures?

In the thumbnail I thought yeah nice idea looks great.

But when i downloaded it there was unfortunately the complete opposite experience.

It is way too blurry and washed out and the contrast is also really bad. Have you ever seen a shadow which was completely black when the sun was shining? Me not because it does not exist.

@Friesiansam What do you mean "people like me"? Is there a certain type of people who take these kind of pictures? I'm not an expert photographer; merely an amateur. This is the first time I'm posting something on Interfacelift and it looks like the community likes this picture. I'm sorry if I offended you with this picture. I know I may have made mistakes. Perhaps you need to look up something called "constructive criticism".

@Jonathan Besler I'm sorry you didn't like this picture. I wasn't aware that there were certain rules as to how the colors should be. I took the picture and fiddled with it until I liked it. My family and friends liked it too. I realize that there are different tastes and that not all people may like this picture.

No I don't think that I don't like it.
It's the fact that the postwork in Picasa ruined the picture, the colors are like a cartoon and the contrast too high.
Maybe you can upload the original image? I think the motive of the pic is quite good but your edits destroyed the good look

I think it's a great shot.

Friesiansam & Jonathan really should work on their feedback skills, their reaction does not project well onto the community of serious photographers.

Great keepsake from your anniversary celebrations!

Personally I think the idea of shooting down on the field with the shadow is a great one and one that i have not seen on Interfacelift.

I have to agree with the first two posts. Take a look at the image below yours on the main page by contedalo81. It had the details of the wood in the guard rail and the gravel of the road and the mountains in the background while having the colors of the red flowers along the road pop out. Its a subtle editing while keeping detail and other hews realistic looking.

For your picture, having detail of the crops in the balloon shadow along with a bit less green enhancements and more detail of the crops below would help restore some of the realistic detail while still getting the effect you're going for.

All in all great idea. For editing, sometimes the smallest changes make the biggest difference.

This is one of the most intriguing shots posted in the recent months on this website. And the colors/processing look fine to me...

@sampaylim @v1rtu0s0 Thank you!

@YVille thank you for your constructive criticism! I'm still new at this; thank you for your pointers. I'll keep your points in mind the next time I edit my images. I see your point about preserving the details.

Great photo, I do like the over-saturated colors. I am a balloon pilot myself and have seen and taken hundreds of photos like this; and this is as good as any of them.

The over saturation makes the shadow stark black instead of semi-transparent and I know in real life the corn would have been a little more washed looking but balloon pictures are often over-saturated to emphasize the colors so it fits right along with that.
