I wonder if that big bright patch is a galaxy? Andromeda perhaps? Does anyone know... I love this photo for my iPad background. Darker images help me see the letters on below icons much better.

smak910, I don't believe Andromeda is visible with the naked eye (maybe in a few hundred million years). That might be a neighbouring dwarf galaxy like one of the Magellanic Clouds. It would be strange to see that and not the Milky Way side-on.
Anyway, the tone and gradient are beautiful, and what a picturesque silhouette! The skies are so clear down there!

Love this picture. My grandparents were from Sicily and I've always wondered what the sky looks like at night. Please take some more photos of Sicily and post them. Beautiful!
