The rumor on Maui is that the highway that goes around the south is a tough drive. Its slow, but totally doable and has some of the best scenery on the island.

I drove the southern route to Hana, in the southeast part of the island, in 1981 on my honeymoon. Yes, the landscape is beautiful and so is the forest that the road goes through. Some vantage points bought us out over cliffs so high that the giant Pacific breakers below seemed tiny. I'll never forget the biggest orb-weaving spider (and web) I'd ever seen: yellow & black, its legs would have spanned a fair-sized dinner plate. The road WAS rough and my rental car was very secondhand by the time we got back to Lahaina. There were even T-shirts available then which said "I survived the road trip to Hana" I wonder if it's still the same today?
