Cosmological Masterpiece

January 29th, 2016

Working with astronomical image processors at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Md., renowned astrophotographer Robert Gendler has taken science data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) archive and combined it with his own ground-based observations to assemble a photo illustration of the magnificent spiral galaxy M106.

Gendler retrieved archival Hubble images of M106 to assemble a mosaic of the center of the galaxy. He then used his own and fellow astrophotographer Jay GaBany's observations of M106 to combine with the Hubble data in areas where there was less coverage, and finally, to fill in the holes and gaps where no Hubble data existed.

The center of the galaxy is composed almost entirely of HST data taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys, Wide Field Camera 3, and Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 detectors. The outer spiral arms are predominantly HST data colorized with ground-based data taken by Gendler's and GaBany's 12.5-inch and 20-inch telescopes, located at very dark remote sites in New Mexico. The image also reveals the optical component of the "anomalous arms" of M106, seen here as red, glowing hydrogen emission.

Queenstown from Bob's Peak

November 18th, 2016

Ben Lomond (Bob's Peak) is a mountain in New Zealand which offers a great aerial scenic view over Queenstown, a resort town at Lake Wakatipu. A Skyline Gondola ascends Bob's Peak on Ben Lomond, making it easy to lift your 20 pound camera gear up to the 1,631m summit.

Cannon Beach Sunset

March 16th, 2017

Although I absolutely love my trusty Canon 17-40mm f4L lens, I finally decided to upgrade to a 16-35mm f4L. What better way to test it than a weekend at the coast with the family! This is hands down one of the best sunsets I've seen at the Oregon Coast.

Shot with a Sony A7R, and of course a Canon 16-35mm f4L IS. Also using a Manfrotto Tripod and a fotodiox lens adapter.

Adobe Lightroom CC, Adobe Photoshop CC.

Mount Cook Sunset

November 8th, 2014

This is Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand, located in the Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park.

I took this photo a few days ago during my stay at Lake Tekapo. We traveled along Lake Pukaki while the mountain was covered in clouds. Later that day we got really lucky with the weather, as it became really sunny and the complete mountain range was cloud free, which happens not really often. After sunset, I had the great opportunity to take this photo, while the mountain was covered in the last red sunrays while the other mountains and the lake went dark. The reflections on the lake were just marvelous.

The photo is nearly untouched, I just did some minimal lens correction and color adaption, as photos taken with the 70-300mm sometimes seem to be a bit foggy.

Totality

September 6th, 2017

I almost didn't shoot at all. I didn't have solar filters, and didn't want to risk missing anything, but I decided to pop off a couple shots during totality while viewing the eclipse from a friend's property in Madras, Oregon. It was one of the most amazing two minutes of my life. An experience I will hold close forever.

Shot with a Sony A7rii and a Canon 70-200mm f4 IS.

Umbrella Thorn

May 27th, 2015

Taken on my trip to the Etosha National Park, Namibia.

That is not a sea on the horizon, it is the Etosha Pan, an almost always dry salt lake.
