Natural Arch

October 13th, 2015

Taken at the Natural Arch (Bridge) in Springbrook National Park, Queensland, Australia. A popular destination for many years it has changed since I've last been there (many years ago) with the addition of a tree that has fallen through the cave roof and, unfortunately, a viewing platform which restricts photo options. Nonetheless I'm pleased with how this came out but I feel it is most suited to a wider aspect crop.

Edited in Adobe Camera Raw.

Reflection on the Lake

June 5th, 2015

Reflection of Mount Cook and the surrounding peaks on Lake Pukaki. The mountain was touched with the last sunrays of that day. Endless tranquility.

The Rock at Rainier

November 15th, 2017

This was my first trip to Mt Rainier National Park. These are all the clouds I got for 3 days, but it was still an amazing visit.

Impenetrable

November 10th, 2017

The big trees and the high cliff makes the jungle impenetrable. This nice view was taken at Mauritius during a ride across the island in September 2017.

A Bavarian Sunset

November 17th, 2017

After fours hours on trains and buses and a hay fever-intensive hike, we got to our destination. Sunsets in Bavaria are always a special experience and alpine sunsets are truly magical. If you ever plan to hike in Bavaria, I would highly recommend checking out the Allgäuer Alpen in the west.

Orion Nebula in the Infrared

January 18th, 2013

ESO/J. Emerson/VISTA.
Acknowledgment: Cambridge Astronomical Survey Unit

This wide-field view of the Orion Nebula (Messier 42), lying about 1350 light-years from Earth, was taken with the VISTA infrared survey telescope at ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile. The new telescope's huge field of view allows the whole nebula and its surroundings to be imaged in a single picture and its infrared vision also means that it can peer deep into the normally hidden dusty regions and reveal the curious antics of the very active young stars buried there. This image was created from images taken through Z, J and Ks filters in the near-infrared part of the spectrum. The exposure times were ten minutes per filter. The image covers a region of sky about one degree by 1.5 degrees.

Celestial Fireworks

April 24th, 2015

NASA and ESA are celebrating the Hubble Space Telescope's silver anniversary of 25 years in space by unveiling some of nature's own fireworks — a giant cluster of about 3,000 stars called Westerlund 2. The cluster resides inside a vibrant stellar breeding ground known as Gum 29, located 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina. The comparatively young, 2-million-year-old star cluster contains some of our galaxy's hottest, brightest, and most massive stars. The largest stars are unleashing a torrent of ultraviolet light and hurricane-force winds that etch away the enveloping hydrogen gas cloud. This creates a fantasy celestial landscape of pillars, ridges, and valleys.

A friend of mine scouted the place, and we were in position just before the Moon appeared from behind the mountain.

Totality

September 6th, 2017

I almost didn't shoot at all. I didn't have solar filters, and didn't want to risk missing anything, but I decided to pop off a couple shots during totality while viewing the eclipse from a friend's property in Madras, Oregon. It was one of the most amazing two minutes of my life. An experience I will hold close forever.

Shot with a Sony A7rii and a Canon 70-200mm f4 IS.

Sony Alpha 7R.
