Bandon Face Rock

December 8th, 2013

The locally famous "Face Rock" in Bandon, Oregon, USA. Lots of photographers flock to this small coastal town these days. You see ads for tours to Bandon in magazines such as Outdoor Photographer. This small town has changed much from the 1980s when I went to high school there.

Stonehenge Storm

May 5th, 2018

It was raining the morning we left London and drove out to Stonehenge. We were feeling less and less optimistic about our timing as the rain continued throughout the day. Fortunately, as we boarded the shuttle that took us to the site, the rain stopped and the clouds began to break apart a bit. The dying light of the day mixed well with the layers of clouds in this 4 shot HDR exposure.

The Galactic Center

January 31st, 2016

This composite image combines a near-infrared view from the Hubble Space Telescope, an infrared view from the Spitzer Space Telescope, and an X-ray view from the Chandra X-ray Observatory into one multi-wavelength picture.

It features the spectacle of stellar evolution: from vibrant regions of star birth, to young hot stars, to old cool stars, to seething remnants of stellar death called black holes. This activity occurs against a fiery backdrop in the crowded, hostile environment of the galaxy's core, the center of which is dominated by a supermassive black hole nearly four million times more massive than our Sun. Permeating the region is a diffuse blue haze of X-ray light from gas that has been heated to millions of degrees by outflows from the supermassive black hole as well as by winds from massive stars and by stellar explosions. Infrared light reveals more than a hundred thousand stars along with glowing dust clouds that create complex structures including compact globules, long filaments, and finger-like "pillars of creation," where newborn stars are just beginning to break out of their dark, dusty cocoons.

Lake Ohau - Valley of the Winds

March 7th, 2017

Lake Ohau is a glacial lake in the Mackenzie Basin of New Zealand's South Island. When I arrived at the lake, the last beams of sunlight shed across the mountain range and I had only minutes to take these photos. The strong winds in this area didn't really help. Would you like to see other New Zealand photos?

Skogafoss - Raw Power

July 24th, 2015

Skógafoss is a waterfall situated on the Skógá River in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline and is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 25 m (82 feet) and a drop of 60 m (200 ft).

According to legend, the first Viking settler in the area buried a treasure in a cave behind the waterfall but I couldn't find it...
