It is said that Tolkien travelled through the landscape of Switzerland to the Lauterbrunnen Valley, a deep valley that many people now believe was the direct inspiration for the valley of Rivendell, a place instrumental to events both in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

The name Rivendell itself means "Deeply Cloven Valley" and the Lauterbrunnen, with its steep sides and many waterfalls (72 to be exact), certainly fits this description, with the mountains of the Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau lying beyond.

Les Maroon Bells (littéralement les « Cloches Bordeaux ») sont une montagne avec deux pics appelés Maroon Peak et North Maroon Peak, distants de quelque cinq-cents mètres. Elle se situe à 20 kilomètres au sud de la ville d'Aspen, dans les monts Elk, à la frontière entre les comtés de Pitkin et de Gunnison, dans l'État du Colorado, aux États-Unis. Les deux sommets font partie des fourteeners, ceux atteignant plus de 14 000 pieds, soit 4 267 mètres d'altitude. Le Maroon Peak, au sud, culmine à 4 315 mètres (27e plus haut du Colorado) et le North Maroon Peak à 3 048 mètres (50e plus haut du Colorado), soit respectivement 14 156 et 14 014 pieds.

Lightning over the Grand Canyon. I took this photo on the north rim of the Grand Canyon near Bright Angel Point looking south-east across the canyon.

A large thunderstorm rolled through and I was shooting 10-30 second exposures.

This photo has not been modified with the exception of some noise smoothing. The colors and other aspects of the photo are as they were captured.
