Unforgettable Bryce

December 5th, 2009

This is Bryce Canyon, Utah. The Sun was setting in front of us and created a highlight behind the hoodoos. Apart from the light, the sand sediments have created a wonderful range of orange and red tones. I hope this fragile environment will stay this way for many more years!

Horseshoe Bend at Sunset

August 3rd, 2013

When I arrived at Horseshoe Bend in Paige, Arizona in the mid-afternoon, I immediately knew that it would be worth the wait for sunset. I staked out a spot that I thought would be the most rewarding visually, and proceeded to wait. Two hours and one sunburn later, I had what I had envisioned; a golden canyon and clear sky.

Because of the low light situation, I shot in RAW with an ISO of 800, and a shutter speed of around 1/125. To capture all the detail, I set the aperture to around f.11. Later brightening and noise reduction was accomplished in Photoshop, while the tones were corrected in Lightroom.

The River

November 7th, 2014

I took this at Yellowstone National Park. This is the grand canyon of Yellowstone, and although minuscule in comparison with the real grand canyon it was still a breathtaking view, the animated river snaking in between great mountains of yellow stone.

Artist Point at Sunset

December 28th, 2013

Lower Yellowstone Falls as seen from Artist Point at sunset on July 9th, 2013. The Grand Canyon of Yellowstone National Park is an incredible sight.

Artist Point was so by named Frank Jay Haynes who incorrectly this spot along the south rim as the location from which Thomas Moran sketched the lower falls in 1872. Those sketches were later determined to have been made from the north rim of the canyon, but the name stuck.

Shot as a vertical panorama at six levels of exposure (0.25 sec to 8 sec).
