First Light
By IronRanger
August 10th, 2010
The first rays of the Sun cast a golden glow over the Duluth Ship Canal's north pier on the morning of Thursday, April 29, 2010. I only had about five minutes to get this shot and a few others like it -- a glorious morning on the North Shore of Lake Superior! This picture did not require significant color work -- it really was a wonderful sunrise.
Nikon D5000, AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR, Adobe Camera Raw, Adobe Photoshop CS4.

Very nice pic, however, the lighthouse and the lamp are falling over. Since you're using photoshop, you might as well straighten it up a little.
insightful
immature
This is a wallpaper site, not a "nice scene" site. This one could be sharper. The Loupe and its small thumbnails strike again?

This is flawless and amazing wallpaper in every aspect. "the lighthouse and the lamp are falling over"... Huh??? The commentators before me need some glasses and stop smoking the stuff they been smoking lately. There is not a single flaw with this fantastic sunset. Is it the sunset effect that gets some sunset haters into their useless rants? I stopped commenting for the most part since it's the waste of time around here but grilling a flawless image is just insane. I think I had enough. Ugh... I can't believe I had to type all this. For all the naysayers I will repeat myself once again... if you don't like this site NO ONE is forcing you to come here. Stop all your whining and grow up or find another place for your worthless comments!
IronRanger thanks for sharing this amazing image. I greatly appreciate it. Kudos to the "Loupe" as well. Cheers!

Wonderful wallpaper and picture. I understand that it's not in the best quality because you used the kit lens, but you did do a great job.
You got people with the names "JOECOOL55" and "JFASI" commenting. Just disregard and keep doing what you want to do.

A long, pointless rant like that is just as bad as the people you're supposeldy complaining about. People will dislike images for different reasons, how is telling them they need glasses and accusing their views of being infulenced by drugs useful?
Flawless and amazing is your opinion, i think it's a great shot but the sun itself looks a bit blurred/not as sharp.
My opinion, that OK with you?

That's the way they debate in Russia so igorenko is just doing what comes naturally to him. You disagree, you go to gulag, or you're shot. Not much room for civil discussion.
This forum is great, for as long people are not intimidated or outright attacked for voicing their opinions. Most of the time this Russian fella with his pointless, pompous ramble is just a bad read, but this is going way over the top.
I registered just to say this.

Love it! Beautiful orange! I enjoy sunrises much more than sunsets, and today of all days was the perfect time for this great photo to pop up on IFL. Thank you!
Sorry, Macindows, your Matterhorn photo just got bumped off my desktop ;)

Great ! Yes, it could be sharper, but the mood of this picture is that great that the sharpness doesn´t count at all. And the bird sitting on top of the lamp makes this perfect ;-)

lighthouses are not that beautiful on their own, a part of what makes them so romantic is the environment they're in....a rocky cliff, a flowery hill etc. the concrete pier that this one is on is outright unpleasant.
otherwise technically it's a solid photo, smooth, clean yet sharp enough. though perhaps a little bland.

It's a nice enough snap, technically there's nothing wrong with it, so it will please those that like to do nothing but analyse the IQ or arbitrary 'rules' of photography rather than the picture itself, but as quicksand says, it's just not very interesting. We've all seen sunsets on here before, so it needs to be extra special to stand out from the rest, and unfortunately this one doesn't really do anything for me.

You guys are pretty funny. As everyone knows each individual is entitled to their own opinion and view however what I was saying is totally different. As I stated in my previous post technically this image is flawless and that is undeniable fact. I was referring to some non-existent flaws that were brought up such as a lighthouse and lamp post falling over to name one. I think some of you need to learn how to read instead of pulling things out of context. You may like this or you may not and it's solely up to you but as any logical person would say - this image is perfectly executed. What really annoys me are the constant attacks towards any sunset images. What is the hate against sunset images I just can't understand. I see it over and over again and it's rather upsetting. Tim I just wanted to let you know that I believe in free speech so what you said is irrelevant not to mention that I am NOT even Russian.

@Igor
You say: "I think some of you need to learn how to read"
I say you should too, you ramble about sunsets and the image is called: First Light and IronRanger even gives som give aways in the description...
That said i agree it's a nice image of a sunrise.

Calling something flawless suggests that either the artist is using two accounts, or that you don't know what you're talking about.
But anyways, this is indeed a very, very well executed image. Overall, complaints about sharpness can be offset by the fact that the image is shot into the sun, and that the high contrast makes it a moot point. The top of the lighthouse, however, is quite blurry.
The lighthouse and the lamp are slightly tilted, although not enough to cause a problem in the overall composition. The subject matter has been done to death, but hey, in a vacuum this is a very pretty image.

It is interesting that almost every pointless argument in these forums begins with a comment from the "perfectionist".

Personally, I can't see the "falling over" thing at all. I do certainly see an overall lack of sharpness and crispness. That's probably gonna keep this otherwise wonderful image off my own desktop. Though I do really love the colors. Oh why not. Downloaded.

Ha ha... thanks for correcting me. Yeah my post looks funny talking about sunset. I meant to say sunset/sunrise... Duh. I have been working very long hours lately... Sunsets/sunrises are usually pretty similar except some color differences at times. But I still don't see any issues with sharpness either. I would rather have a little softer image than an over-sharpened to death as it was witnessed with some of the recent submissions. When the image is a little soft you can sharpen it in your software but when it's over-sharpened it's ruined forever. I am still sticking to my original assessment as "flawless".

ahh there is nothing like this time of day..well besides sunSET, both of which i have no problem seeing on the front page, and i never get tired of seeing them.
I agree, this is a very well executed shot, perfect amount of sun, and just a nice horizon. I also agree with scooter, the classic bird in the lamp post makes it all that much better.
what lean? blur on the lighthouse? not every picture is perfect. every one is unique in their own way, just accept them as they come.

I like it.
Guys: the pic made it through the loupe, so others must like that pic too. Everyone is entitled to comment a pic, everyone is entitled to express it's opinion, even if wrong. But please don't go flamewaring and boltthrowing in here, it's quite disturbing.

I love this. I kind of wish it was a super wide panorama as sunsets and sunrise photos always look a little lacking in scale.
Thanks for it. :)
@ Daguul
I'm more than certain that there are images that get through to the main page without ever seeing the Loupe.

nice shot with a fuzzy warm feeling to it. not all pictures have to be sharp enough to cut your eyeballs.
as for Igor the guy shows a passion for other peoples shared captures/creations. those people who comment with disdain instead of something useful towards these peoples works are a sad bunch.
